You can HELP
Special Needs Animals

EBONY

Ebony is a little girl who was in a horrible car accident. A nice man rescued her and rushed her to the Vet. She lost her left eye and had a fractured jaw. Now she needs a loving Furever Home. Call 742-3070

Special Needs Animals like Ebony are Dogs, Cats or Horses that need more than just the basic Vet care to get adopted into their Forever Home. They may have a broken paw or have a disease that needs special care. These are animals you can't just ignore as Animal Lovers but you don't have funds in the budget for the special care they need. This is where YOU can help.

Do Our Pets Love Us?

We know how we feel towards our pets, but do they experience the same emotions toward us? Or is the bond simply a mixture of instinct, dependence and social role?

In short, do our pets really “love” us, as we understand it? In a word, the answer is yes, according to clinical evidence. Food does play a large role in feelings of affection between pet and owner. But dog does not live by biscuit alone – and neither does a cat's affection depend solely on treats. The mere presence and/or touch of a preferred person has been shown to reduce the heart rate of these animals – a sign of bonding. (The same is true with horses.) (more)

t
o help make
Blount County a
 No Kill Community

The Blount County Humane Society is striving to build a Safe Shelter where the No Kill Philosophy will be followed and we need your HELP.

No Kill means that you put the life of the animal above the human convenience known as "Animal Control".

The Blount County Government is in the process of building a Shelter (Pound) where 70-80% of the dogs and cats will be KILLED to provide Animal Control

The organization recruited by
the County Government to raise 100% of the funds for this
"Municipal Kill Shelter"
is the Smoky Mountain
Animal Care Foundation.

Please don't support this
Kill Philosophy.

Only support  Shelter Efforts that are committed to the
No Kill Philosophy.

Please join the Blount County Humane Society's No Kill Revolution and help us build a SAFE No Kill Shelter for the animals of Blount County.

The 3 links below are highly recommended for anyone who would like to see Blount County become a
No Kill County

Only Support the No Kill Philosophy in Blount County...Animal Control Shelters like the proposed Blount County Animal Center being promoted by the Smoky Mountain Animal Care Foundation and the County Government Animal Control Committee will KILL large numbers of animals to provide "Animal Control".... Animal Control Equals Killing Large Numbers of Animals for Human Convenience...Don't let them fool you by saying "This (KILLING) is the only way".

A National Tragedy

We are a nation of cat and dog
lovers. But the shelters we expect to
provide these animals with a second
chance are instead killing millions of
them every year. And for far too long,
we have been told that there is no
other way. More than that, we have
been told that the killing is exclusively
 the public's fault. That shelters—
through no fault of their own—are
 merely performing the public's dirty
 work—with skill, compassion, and
 dedication. Nothing could be further
 from the truth.

 From entrenched bureaucrats who
are content with the status quo, to
 uncaring shelter directors hostile to
calls for reform; from agencies mired
in the failed philosophies of the past
to those who have internalized a
 culture of defeatism—the roadblocks
to No Kill are substantial, but not
 insurmountable.
We have a choice.
We can fully, completely and without
reservation embrace No Kill as our
future. Or we can continue to
 legitimize the two-prong strategy of
failure: adopt a few and kill the rest
.

It is a choice which history has
thrown upon us. And a challenge that
the No Kill Advocacy Center is ready
to take on. The No Kill Advocacy
 Center is the nation’s first
 organization dedicated solely to the
promotion of a No Kill nation.

            Redemption

Don't forget to order a copy of Nathan Winograd's book Redemption: The Myth of Pet Overpopulation and the No Kill Revolution in America, which is being called "powerful," "inspirational," and a "must read for anyone who cares about animals."

Redemption is the story of animal sheltering in the United States, a movement that was born of compassion and then lost its way. It is the story of
the “No Kill” movement, which says we can and
must stop the killing. It is about heroes and villains, betrayal and redemption. And it is about a social movement as noble and just as those that have
come before. But most of all, it is a story about believing in the community and trusting in the power of compassion.

Dogs Deserve Shelter

One of the most common animal cruelty calls we get is that there is a dog without a dog house out in the rain or cold. Shelter from the elements is one of  the most basic needs of a dog. Most of the people who have these dogs are low income and cannot afford to go out and buy a suitable dog house.

The Blount County Humane Society has been chosen as a full time adoption partner at the new Maryville PETSMART. This means we will have many of our adoptable pets on site at PETSMART 7 days a week for you to come by and fall in love with.

PETSMART is a great company and works only
with Animal Rescue Groups to provide adoptable
animals to the public. They are really committed
to getting homeless dogs and cats adopted and
we would like to encourage everyone in the
Humane Society Pack to support their efforts by
patronizing their new store in Alcoa. This type of
adoption program is essential to our goals of
making Blount County a No Kill County.

Although we have Cat adoptions every day at

PETSMART our BIG adoption day is Saturday.
That's when the Dogs come out to play. We call
this our Saturday Dog Days an we need a lot of
help to get our critters adopted.

Volunteer Opportunity

Bekah Scarbro will be heading up our adoption program at  PETSMART. She will need a lot of help making this program a success so if you would like to volunteer and help find our Critters a great home please give them a ring. This is a wonderful opportunity to really make a difference in the life of a deserving Dog, Cat, Puppy or Kitten by helping them find their Forever Home, so we hope to hear from you soon.

...Words of Wisdom!

When Henry Bergh, founder of the ASPCA, was asked to take over the New York City Pound to Kill Dogs and Cats and have the ability to levy fines for the breaking of animal control laws...he refused. Henry believed that Animal Protection was fundamentally at odds with Animal Control. He believed that Animal Protection was a tool to champion and protect life, not to end it. Henry understood implicitly that Animal Welfare and Animal Control were two separate and distinct movements, each opposing the other on fundamental issues of life and death. Henry was unwilling to abandon Animal Protections principles so far as to encourage the tortures of Animal Control...We should feel the same today with a 75% Kill Rate in our Nations Pounds!

...Words of Wisdom!

"The bottom line is that as long as people believe that killing homeless pets is one of those "necessary evils" that can never be stopped, then it will never be stopped." Michael Mountain...Best Friends Animal Society

"If we don't put an end to the senseless killing of healthy adoptable pets, we run the risk of finding there is no room for us when it is our turn to enter heaven" Bruce Langlois DVM, Veterinary Director Remote Area Medical
